Ms. Opal's Walk

Opal’s Walk for Freedom

On Wednesday, June 19th, individuals from around the globe participated in Dr. Opal Lee's Walk for Freedom, either by attending the in-person event in Dallas or by joining virtually from their neighborhoods, fitness centers, or tracks.

Dr. Opal Lee completed her annual 2.5 mile walk to recognize the 2.5 years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach the enslaved people in Texas. The efforts of Dr. Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”, were instrumental in the creation of Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021 and in bringing the highly anticipated National Juneteenth Museum to Fort Worth.
