The museum also obtained works that expand upon definitions and pathways of freedom like Houston artist Ann “Sole Sister” Johnson’s Homespun, a mixed media work that features the garments from the Seward Plantation in Brenham, Texas, and a restored mixed media beadwork from Johnson’s 2004 Hooping Dreaming series that draws connections between basketball, “hoop dreams,” and the promise of freedom. The work was most recently highlighted at Johnson’s exhibition on these works at the Museum of African Diaspora in 2025.
