Juneteenth Freedom Bell Project

Call for artists now open!

The National Juneteenth Museum has been invited to join the Juneteenth Freedom Bell Project, a growing statewide public art project that began in Galveston — the birthplace of Juneteenth, and now extends across Texas. Each participating city commissions an original bell, rooted in its own Juneteenth history and told through the eyes of a local artist.

Fort Worth's Juneteenth Freedom Bell will become a permanent part of NJM's collection — one landmark in a connected, living memorial to the ongoing pursuit of freedom and justice.

The selected design will be cast, unveiled, and later join the National Juneteenth Museum's permanent collection.

Artist Opportunity

Our Juneteenth Freedom Bell will feature an artist’s custom design inspired by local Juneteenth history, community narratives and the enduring significance of freedom. The final design will be transformed into a functional cast bell through a collaborative process with experienced sculptors and fabricators.

For the selection process, interested artists should apply for consideration. Three finalists will be selected and will each receive a $700 honorarium to develop a design proposal.

One final artist will be selected to receive a $3,000 commission to create the inaugural Freedom Bell. Throughout the commission, the selected artist will also participate in interviews, photography, studio visits and video storytelling that documents the creative process.
