Dr. Opal Lee Honored in Barbie’s New “Inspiring Women” Collection

Dr. Opal Lee has been honored with her own Barbie doll as part of Mattel’s “Inspiring Women” collection, which recognizes women throughout history for their activism and lasting contributions to society.

The doll reflects Lee’s signature look from her “Walk for Freedom,” the cross-country walking campaign she began at age 89 to raise awareness and build support for Juneteenth as a national holiday. Her grassroots effort helped spark renewed attention to the holiday commemorating the end of slavery.

Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, a milestone many credit in part to Lee’s persistence and advocacy. The Barbie tribute serves as both a cultural honor, introducing new generations to Lee’s role in shaping U.S. history.

The doll is available for purchase on Mattel’s website for $38. Place your order here.
